What is rigging non-critical charges?
Rigging charges means correctly fastening lifting accessories (such as chains, cables, or lifting straps) to a load so it can be safely moved with a crane or hoisting device.
Non-critical charges are relatively simple and predictable to handle. They are usually:
- straightforward in shape,
- stable in their center of gravity,
- easily accessible and visible,
- without particular risk of damage or danger.
Examples include pallets, crates, or standard construction materials. Attaching non-critical loads is a basic skill for safe work with lifting equipment.
Through our training, participants acquire all the necessary knowledge to safely work with heavy loads.
Both theoretical (e.g., force calculations) and practical aspects (e.g., selecting and using the right equipment) are covered.
We also clarify the difference between critical and non-critical loads, so participants can always act responsibly.

Any employee who regularly needs to attach and move or direct non-critical loads.
The training emphasizes the most important basic insights for safely attaching non-critical loads with standard equipment (slings, steel cables, clamps, hoists, etc.).
This training is not sufficient for operations that require you to use specialised equipment.
Learning to strike and rig charges in a safe and responsible manner.
Participants who succeed will …
- be able to distinguish between critical and non-critical loads.
- know the various lifting accessories, their characteristics, and applications.
- be able to communicate clearly with the crane operator.
- acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge.
- understand load distribution.
This can be done in several ways.

Participants who succeed will …
- understand the difference between critical and non-critical charges.
- understand risks involved in attaching and moving loads.
The following legal matters are known:
- Applicable applications of the Welfare Act/ARAB/Codex
- Conditions of CE marking, atmospheric conditions, safety function and medical examination.
- Conditions in terms of inspection of equipment used.
The following discipline techniques are known:
- Technical basics (weight, center of gravity, forces, angles, load factors, safety coefficients),
- The forces and factors that influence this (angles, method of striking, number of load-bearing parts, the lifting beam, etc.)
- Some basic load-related concepts (working load, breaking load, working load factor, safety coefficient)
- Material-related concepts and calculations (utilisation factor, angles of attack, load calculation)
- All necessary arm and hand signals
The material is known:
- The different types of equipment that can be used (straps, cables, hoists, clamps, etc.).
- One knows which material can be applied where.
- Equipment maintenance and control is known.
- One can correctly interpret the data found on the material.
Practical assignment 1
The participant knows how to secure and move a simple structure (e.g. a number of pipes) with an easily determinable centre of gravity.
Various points are checked, including the correct use of materials, but also the implementation of safety measures, signals and PPE.
Practical assignment 2
The participant can correctly attach, move and place a machine (fitted with eye bolts) on a foundation.
The assessment criteria are the same as for the first practical assignment, but because the load looks different, the participant must adapt accordingly.
Practical assignment 3
For the final practical assignment, we ask the participant to carefully and safely guide a load along a course:
passing, crossing and going behind obstacles at different heights. The participant must, of course, correctly execute all hand and arm signals and communicate clearly with the operator via radio.
As the training on rigging charges and the exam take place on location, we always expect the customer to provide the necessary equipment.
This way, no equipment needs to be brought on site, no deposit is paid and the student learns to work with the equipment the employer has in his/her possession.
The location for this training must always be provided by the customer.
This has several advantages, notably the fact that participants can learn in familiar surroundings.
This not only means fewer nerves thanks to familiar surroundings, but also improved practical insight!
The training lasts 1 day. There is room for a maximum of 8 experienced or 5 non-experienced participants per session.
The exam has two parts: practical and theoretical.
The theoretical exam takes about 30 minutes.
The practical exam takes a minimum of 30 minutes.
Each participant who passes both exams will receive a certificate. This certificate is valid for 5 years. After this period of 5 years, it is the employer’s responsibility to schedule a new training or refresher course. After this training, the participant can be re-certified.
If a participant does not pass, the company’s representative will be contacted and, in consultation with the company, a solution will be sought.
You will receive a certificate of participation from Prevom. This certificate will state that you have successfully completed the training.
Prevom recommends a reassessment of employees’ competences within 5 years of the certificate’s issue date.
If you have lost your attestation, it is best to discuss this with your employer. They can then contact Prevom.
We charge a €30 administrative fee for issuing a new certificate.
No, this training is exclusively for companies.
