General objective:
Learn to operate a forklift safely and efficiently in a familiar environment.

This includes:

• We train participants to perform a safety-critical role.
• The participant becomes an efficient materials handler who proactivelyreports defects and malfunctions.
• The participant learns how to prevent accidents, injuries and damage to both products and the work environment.
• The participant gains an in-depth understanding of the principles of safe dynamic driving.

The following provides a detailed overview of the theoretical learning outcomes of the training course.

Participants who succeed will …

• understands the safety responsibilities of a forklift operator.
• nows what a work permit is and can interpret and comply with its requirements.
• understands load charts and can use them correctly.
• knows the different types of power systems (electric, gas and hybrid) and their applications.
• knows which factors determine the load capacity and stability of a forklift.
• has a good understanding of the different types of pallets, storage methods and their associated hazards.

The following safety procedures are understood:

1. Observing designated traffic directions.
2. Slowing down before turns.
3. Maintaining a safe distance between forklifts.
4. The protective function of the overhead guard.
5. The prohibition on carrying passengers.
6. Using an appropriate driving speed.
7. The procedures for connecting and disconnecting a battery at the charging station, as well as connecting and disconnecting a gas cylinder.
8. The correct fork travel height.
9. Adjusting the mast height according to the load.

The following terms are understood:

Set-down height, free lift, overhead clearance, mast types, 3- and 4-wheel forklifts, turning radius, and explosion-proof/ATEX forklifts.

Understands the pre-operation inspection:

1. Handbrake and foot brake.
2. Hydraulic system test.
3. Visual inspection of the tyres
4. Checking the steering play, chain tension, forks, horn and fuel level.

• demonstrates safe and appropriate driving techniques, both in forward and reverse operation.
• is able to connect and disconnect batteries safely and correctly.
• works in an organised and tidy manner.

• can drive the forklift safely and correctly, both forwards and backwards.
• can make turns with the forklift in both forward and reverse gear.
• can negotiate turns with the forklift safely, both forwards and backwards.
• can stack goods in a confined space with a maximum clearance of 1 metre beyond the forklift’s turning radius.
• can accurately assess distance, depth and height.
• can safely manoeuvre the forklift through narrow passages.

The most important safety regulations for operating a forklift are:

• Wear the seat belt and make sure you are seated in the correct position while driving.
• Keep the load low while driving and ensure that it is stable and properly positioned.
• Respect the forklift’s maximum load capacity.
• Avoid sharp turns at high speeds and drive slowly at intersections or in narrow aisles.
• Carry out regular vehicle inspections to ensure that the forklift is in good working condition.
• Ensure clear communication with other employees in the workplace.

As the training and examination take place at your company, the customer is expected to provide the necessary equipment.

For this forklift training course, a forklift in good working condition, with a fully charged battery, must be provided.

This way, no equipment needs to be brought to the site, no deposit is required, and participants immediately learn how to operate the specific forklift model used by their employer.

The location for this forklift training must always be provided by the customer.

This offers several advantages, particularly the fact that participants can learn in their own workplace.

This not only means fewer nerves thanks to familiar surroundings, but also improved practical insight!

The training lasts 1 day. There is room for a maximum of 8 experienced or 5 non-experienced participants per session.

The exam has two parts: practical and theoretical.

The theoretical exam takes about 30 minutes.

The practical exam takes a minimum of 30 minutes.

Each participant who passes both exams will receive a certificate. This certificate is valid for 5 years. After this period of 5 years, it is the employer’s responsibility to schedule a new training or refresher course. After this training, the participant can be re-certified.

If a participant does not pass, the company’s representative will be contacted and, in consultation with the company, a solution will be sought.

You will receive a certificate of participation from Prevom. The certificate confirms that you have successfully completed the forklift operator training.

The legislator expects employers to ensure that employees are demonstrably trained and authorised to drive machinery. In addition, this training also provides an opportunity to sharpen your competences.

Prevom recommends a reassessment of employees’ competences within 5 years of the certificate’s issue date.

If you operate a forklift without a valid certificate, you risk fines or sanctions from the labour inspectorate. You also put yourself and others at risk, as you may not be fully aware of the applicable safety regulations. Employers are required to ensure that all forklift operators have a valid certificate.
