Scaffold inspector training

All employees who are required to inspect scaffolding structures effectively to ensure safety, including fixed scaffolds, mobile scaffolds, suspended scaffolds, and similar systems.

Scaffold inspectors are regularly appointed by the client or employer to determine whether a particular scaffold can still be safely accessed and used.

This training therefore focuses specifically on the key concepts and inspection points needed to thoroughly assess a scaffold. Basic knowledge of scaffold use is required.

General objective:

Learn to inspect scaffolding effectively, identify defects accurately and prepare a correct report of the findings to determine whether a scaffold is safe or unsafe.

This includes:

• The implementation of measures to prevent people or objects from falling.
• The implementation of safety measures to manage risks associated with changing weather conditions.
• Compliance with the applicable requirements regarding permissible loads.

General knowledge

Participants who succeed will …

• is aware of the hazards and risks associated with working at height, including falls, falling objects, structural collapse, and related dangers.
• is able to identify and describe the different types of scaffolding, including mobile scaffolds, façade scaffolds, protective scaffolds, and other commonly used structures.
• is familiar with the different scaffolding load classes and their respective applications.

Legislation

Participants who succeed will …

• Is familiar with the legislation and standards relating to scaffolding construction and inspection, including ARAB, the Codex on Well-being at Work, and applicable Belgian and European regulations and standards.
• is able to describe the roles, responsibilities, and authorities of the various individuals involved in the use and assembly of scaffolding.

Trade-related knowledge

Participants who succeed will …

• is familiar with the various components of a scaffold, including base plates, screw jacks, toe boards, couplers, and other essential elements.
• knows and understands the requirements that a scaffold must meet to be considered compliant and safe for use.
• is able to identify and explain the criteria that may lead to a scaffold being rejected or deemed unsafe for use.
• is familiar with the different types of scaffold anchoring systems.
• has an understanding of the principles and functions of diagonal bracing in scaffolding structures.
• is familiar with the different types of beams used in scaffolding and understands their specific characteristics and applications.
• is able to assess the stability of working platforms and understands their characteristics and performance requirements.
• Is able to describe and assess the loads acting on a working platform.

Safety concepts

Participants who succeed will …

• is aware of the requirements and regulations relating to safe scaffold access.
• is aware of the requirements for access routes, passageways, and safety barriers on and around scaffolding structures.
• knows when grounding is required and understands how to install it correctly.

Attention is also given to the checklists used during inspections.

1 | Inspection of a standing scaffold

• Checking the stability of scaffolding.
• Determining protection against overturning and collapse.
• Checking the condition of the scaffold components.
• Checking whether the required safeguards have been installed correctly (and adequately).
• Checking whether scaffold decking is present in sufficient quantity (and in adequate condition).
• Checking whether access to the scaffold(s) and passageways on (and through) the scaffold(s) are safe.
• Confirming whether earthing is necessary (and if so, that it was installed correctly).
• Confirming whether the necessary safety measures regarding the load on the working platform & on the scaffold are in place.

2 | Inspection of a mobile scaffold

• Checking whether sufficient information is available from the manufacturer/supplier.
• Correctly determining the stability of the scaffold.
• Checking whether a wheel locking mechanism is present and (if so) whether it functions correctly.
• Checking the condition of the components.
• Checking whether the required safeguards have been installed correctly (and adequately).
• Checking whether access to the mobile scaffold is safe.
• Confirming whether earthing is necessary (and if so, that it was installed correctly).
• Confirming whether the necessary safety measures regarding the load on the working platform are in place.

3 | Inspection of a suspended scaffold

• Checking whether sufficient information is available from the manufacturer/supplier.
• Confirming that the required anchoring has been installed correctly.
• Checking whether the cage is equipped with adequate safety features.
• Confirming that the suspended scaffold has been inspected by an EDTC within the valid timeframe.
• Checking whether sufficient emergency measures are in place.
• Checking whether the necessary barriers are present and correctly used.
• Checking whether the necessary safety measures regarding loading are in place.

The correct application of checklists is also covered within the context of the above inspections.

As the training and examination take place on-site, we expect the customer to provide the necessary equipment.

In this training, this involves several different types of scaffolding materials.

If you are interested in this training, we will coordinate with you regarding the materials list to ensure the training runs smoothly.

The location for this training must always be provided by the customer.

This has several advantages, notably the fact that participants can learn in familiar surroundings.

This not only means fewer nerves thanks to familiar surroundings, but also improved practical insight!

The training lasts 1 day. There is room for a maximum of 8 experienced or 5 non-experienced participants per session.

The exam has two parts: practical and theoretical.

The theoretical exam takes approximately 15 minutes.

The practical exam lasts a minimum of 45 minutes.

Each participant who passes both exams will receive a certificate. This certificate is valid for 5 years. After this period of 5 years, it is the employer’s responsibility to schedule a new training or refresher course. After this training, the participant can be re-certified.

If a participant does not pass, the company’s representative will be contacted and, in consultation with the company, a solution will be sought.

You will receive a certificate of participation from Prevom. This certificate will state that you have successfully completed the training.

If you have lost your attestation, it is best to discuss this with your employer. They can then contact Prevom.

We charge a €30 administrative fee for issuing a new certificate.
