Yes, by law it is compulsory to undergo training before you are allowed to drive a reach truck. This is necessary to ensure safety in the workplace. Companies must ensure that their employees have obtained a certificate that proves they are competent and qualified to operate a reach truck.

The training lasts 1 day. There is room for a maximum of 8 experienced or 5 non-experienced participants per session.

Yes, there is a clear difference between the two courses. Although both the reach truck and the forklift are used to move loads, they have different applications and operating techniques. The reach truck is designed for narrow aisles and high racking, while a forklift is more versatile and can be used on different terrains. Training courses focus on the specific operation and safety measures for each type of vehicle.

During the training, you will learn:

  • Basic principles of reach truck operation, such as steering, lifting and lowering loads.
  • Manoeuvre safely in narrow corridors and with limited space.
  • Loading and unloading goods at different heights.
  • Safety tips to avoid accidents and damage.
  • Performing daily inspection and maintenance of the reach truck.
  • Emergency procedures in case of accidents or malfunctions.
  • A basic training course is designed for people with no experience driving a forklift. The course includes both theoretical knowledge and extensive practical training.
  • A refresher course is for experienced drivers with an expired or nearly expired certificate. These courses are shorter and focus on refreshing knowledge and skills, as well as updates in safety regulations.
  • You can take such training at various recognised training centres such as Prevom, which specialises in logistics and transport training.

You will receive a certificate of participation from Prevom. This certificate will state that you have successfully completed the training.

If you have lost your attestation, it is best to discuss this with your employer. They can then contact Prevom.

Legislators expect employers to demonstrate that employees are trained and certified competent to drive machinery. The certificate demonstrates this.

Prevom recommends a reassessment of employees’ competences within 5 years of the certificate’s issue date.

The main safety regulations for driving a reach truck are:

  • Always wear the seat belt and sit correctly.
  • Position the cargo stably and correctly to prevent it from tipping over.
  • Respect the maximum load capacity of the reach truck.
  • Drive slowly and manoeuvre carefully, especially in narrow corridors and at crossings.
  • Always switch off the reach truck when not in use.
  • Perform regular inspection of the reach truck for defects or damage.

Operating a reach truck without a certificate puts you at risk of fines or penalties from the labour inspectorate. It also puts the safety of yourself and others at risk because you may not be familiar with proper safety procedures. Employers are obliged to ensure that their staff have received proper training and are certified to operate a reach truck.
