Small extinguishers
Essential heroes of fire safety
Table of contents
Fire safety is something we often only think about when it is too late. However, with the right precautions, you can prevent major disasters. One of the most effective and often underestimated tools for this are small extinguishers. In this blog, we answer some frequently asked questions:
- What are small extinguishers?
- Why are small extinguishers important?
- How can you use small extinguishers effectively?
What are small extinguishers?
Small extinguishers are portable devices designed to extinguish small fires before they get out of control. These include fire extinguishers, fire blankets and fire reels. They are usually compact, easy to operate and can quickly nip an incipient fire in the bud. Although small in size, they can save lives and prevent significant property damage.
There are various types of small extinguishing agents, each specifically designed for different types of fires (fire classes). It is therefore essential to know which extinguishing agent is most effective in which situation.

Fire extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are classified according to the extinguishing agent they contain. The most common are:
- Foam extinguishers:
Suitable for fires involving solids (class A) and liquids (class B) and fats (class F), but not gas fires. Be aware that not every foam extinguisher is suitable for the 3 fire classes, always choose the right foam extinguisher based on the fire class.
They are filled with water and a foaming agent that forms a layer over the fire, cutting off the supply of oxygen. This foam causes virtually no collateral damage and is easy to clean up. Foam extinguishers are therefore ideal for use in flats, offices and tourist accommodation.
- Powder extinguishers:
Suitable for extinguishing fires in fire classes A, B, C and D. Again, make sure you choose the right powder extinguisher based on the fire class. The powder is frost-resistant, so this extinguisher can be used at low temperatures without any problems. This makes powder extinguishers ideal for use in warehouses, garages and other locations where there is a chance of freezing temperatures. Powder extinguishers do cause a lot of collateral damage.
- CO2 extinguishers or carbon dioxide snow extinguishers:
Suitable for extinguishing fires in fire class B (liquids) and fire class E (electrical fires) and cause no collateral damage. This makes them ideal for environments with valuable installations, such as electrical appliances.
In some situations, it is a legal requirement to use a CO2 fire extinguisher:
- Catering kitchens
- Electrical control cabinets
- Paint spray booths
- Welding booths
- Computer and server rooms
Although not a standard part of basic security, CO2 extinguishers play a crucial role in protecting specific objects and sensitive equipment. When using CO2 extinguishers, be aware of the danger of suffocation and burns (from freezing) if used incorrectly.
Fire blankets
A fire blanket is an effective means of quickly extinguishing small fires, such as grease fires in the kitchen. By simply placing the blanket over the flames, the oxygen supply is cut off, quickly extinguishing the fire. In addition, a fire blanket is also safe to use for extinguishing burning clothing.
Fire reels
A fire reel is a permanently installed fire extinguisher with a hose connected to the water supply. These are especially useful in larger buildings such as offices and apartment buildings. A reel can provide unlimited water to bring an incipient fire under control, especially if combustible solids are involved. However, extinguishing a fire could potentially lead to water damage.
Why are small extinguishers important?
Speed is crucial
In a fire, every second counts. Small extinguishers are designed to be quick and easy to use, allowing you to act immediately. This can make the difference between a small, manageable fire and a major disaster.
Protection of human life and property
By tackling an incipient fire immediately, small extinguishers can prevent the fire from spreading. This not only protects buildings and valuable property, but can also save lives.
Easy to use
Small extinguishers are designed with ease of use in mind. This makes them ideal for use at home, in the office or in the car.
Legal obligation
In many countries, including Belgium, small extinguishers are mandatory in certain environments, such as businesses, schools and public spaces to ensure people’s safety.
How can you use small extinguishers effectively?
To get the most out of your small fire extinguishers, there are a few important rules of thumb to keep in mind:
- Choose strategic spots:
Make sure fire extinguishers hang in highly visible and easily accessible places. In an emergency, you need to be able to access them quickly.
- Check regularly:
Fire extinguishers and other extinguishers should be checked regularly to make sure they are working properly. Make sure they are always ready for use.
- Know how to use them:
Read the instructions and practice using fire extinguishers if possible. This will ensure that in a panic situation you know immediately what to do.
- Make the right choice:
Not every extinguishing agent is suitable for every fire because different fire classes have specific properties. The wrong extinguishing agent can aggravate the fire or cause dangerous reactions.
Summary
Small extinguishers play a crucial role in preventing fires or limiting damage. Whether you are at home, in the office, or on the road, it is essential to always have an appropriate extinguisher on hand. By taking the right precautions and knowing how to use small extinguishers effectively, you will be better prepared for unexpected situations.
